5 WAYS TO BEAT THE BLOAT

Say goodbye to that bloated feeling today…
We all get bloating from time to time and it is anything but comfortable. Bloating can come from a number of different things: gas build up, constipation, water retention and food intolerances to name a few. So we’ve put together these 5 tips to help you reduce, and hopefully eliminate, the bloating for good!
1. Stay Hydrated –A foggy head, dry skin, a bad mood and constipation are all signs of de-hydration. Our body is made up of around 70% water, and when we are de-hydrated our body holds on to the water and this ‘water retention’ can be quite uncomfortable. Fruit teas, peppermint tea and non sugary drinks will all help you to stay hydrated, so it doesn’t have to be plain water. The guide is around 5-8 glasses per day.
2. Food Intolerance – Wheat and lactose intolerance can cause stomach discomfort. It’s best to check with your doctor if you suspect you may have a food intolerance, but it can help to avoid these foods for a few days and see if the bloating subsides. Try substituting wheat products with oats or gluten-free alternatives, and replace dairy products with plant-based substitutes such coconut and rice milk, soy or nut milks such as almond or hazelnut.
3. Eat Slowly – We’re all guilty of eating too fast sometimes, but by chewing our food properly we help our gut to break down the food more easily. Not chewing properly can upset the digestive process and can cause bloating.
4. Limit Salt – You’ll probably be surprised how much salt our shop bought pre-prepared food contains. Too much sodium is not great for your heart and it will cause water retention and uncomfortable bloating. Always check the food label, and try adding a squeeze of lemon or chopped herbs to add flavour to your meals. Your taste buds will adapt to less salt and you’ll soon stop missing it!
5. Take A Walk – Try taking a gentle stroll after a meal. The exercise helps to dissolve gas build up in the gut and can take the strain off of your waistband and help you feel a lot more comfortable.
