HAPPY GUT, HAPPY MIND

HAPPY GUT, HAPPY MIND

THE GUT-BRAIN CONNECTION.

Many of us don’t realise just how closely connected our gut and brain are. But they are actually directly linked via the Central Nervous System, so what goes on in our gut can actually affect our emotions and visa versa. This is one of the reasons why so many people with IBS and other bowel disorders usually suffer with varying levels of depression and anxiety too.

It is estimated that around 95% of serotonin found in the body is produced in the gut and the rest is produced in the brain. Serotonin is widely believed to be the chemical involved in regulating our mood, staving off anxiety and increasing our levels of happiness and sense of wellbeing.

Scientists have found that an unhealthy gut microbiome can lower not only serotonin levels but also dopamine, which is known as the ‘reward’ chemical that’s responsible for feelings of pleasure; so our reactions, mood and emotional wellbeing can all be affected by having an unhealthy gut ecology.

With our emotional wellbeing and a digestive health both connected to our gut microbiome, it’s never been more important to take care of our guts good bacteria!
